The Dresden, Germany-built flexible 94 MW power station from Wärtsilä is prepared to aid Germany's energy transformation

The adaptable Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant that the technology company Wärtsilä provided and constructed for the German public utility SachsenEnergie has been put into service and given the all-clear to begin earning money. Before it was handed over in November 2022, the facility underwent a thorough testing process to ensure its dependability and performance. It will provide Dresden with 84 MW of district heating and 94 MW of electrical electricity.

With the help of eight natural gas-powered Wärtsilä 31SG engines, the highly automated factory runs. The engines are exceptionally flexible and have the maximum efficiency in their class. Within five minutes or less of starting up, they can reach their maximum output, and in less than 30 seconds, they can synchronize with the grid to enable fast balancing.

This is crucial to allow for increasing system integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, as well as utility participation in balancing power markets.

"This significantly boosts our ability to generate power. We are certain that we can provide high efficiency for the winter while at the same time giving the required flexibility after extensive testing and validation. There is a significant upheaval in the energy systems. This plant is a part of the solution, according to Dr. Frank Brinkmann, CEO of SachsenEnergie AG, as the energy transition with the objective of decarbonization, or the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, demands creative techniques for a sustainable and secure energy supply.

Wärtsilä provided the plant through engineering, procurement, and construction services.

Additionally, Wärtsilä will maintain the facility for ten years with a five-year extension option under a Guaranteed Asset Performance agreement. Based on measured data, performance goals are set. Wärtsilä promises that these goals will be achieved and upheld for the life of the contract.

"We are happy to help SachsenEnergie generate power and district heating that is reasonable, safe, efficient, and sustainable. The greatest way to realize the full potential of renewable energy sources and to support Germany's ambitious energy transition is through adaptable, future-proof gas engine technology. We are incredibly happy to have partnered with SachsenEnergie. Through initiatives like these, the transition to a future powered entirely by renewable energy develops momentum, according to Kenneth Engblom, Vice President of Africa & Europe for Wärtsilä Energy.
