BERGEN B32:40L8P IS THE MAIN ENGINE
In Vung Tau, Vietnam, Rolls Royce hired Goltens to examine the damage to a Bergen B32:40L8P crankshaft onboard an Anchor Handling Tug (AHTS).
On the maker's advice, the shipowner opted to replace the crankshaft because the maximum undersize for the crankshaft is -2.00mm.
PLANNING AND PREPARATION: Goltens developed a work method and schedule that was evaluated and authorized by the maker and owner for the replacement of the crankshaft. The condemned shaft, counterweights, pistons, and connecting rods were then taken from the engine block and brought to the Goltens workshop using tools that were made by Goltens.
Goltens technicians reinstalled the flywheel and damper on the new crankshaft in the shop and tested the contact between the counterweights and shaft. Goltens also finished calibration checks, rebuilt every piston, and changed the two damaged connecting rods with an onboard spare.
CRANKSHAFT REPLACEMENT AND REBUILD: All parts were packed and ready for return to the ship, where the new crankshaft's rigging and installation were already planned. Goltens inserted the crankshaft after being hooked into the engine room and rebuilt the engine using the overhauled parts.
