The new business's goal was to create new engines in France that would be available for licensing abroad. The first licenses were given to authorized engine building businesses worldwide in 1948.

The Société Générale de Constructions Mécaniques received its first test beds in 1951 after moving to La Courneuve. Later, the equipment was moved to Saint-Denis and then to Saint-Nazaire, enabling the business to accelerate the development of a new series of engines.

Alsthom-Atlantique represented French business in 1976. The conglomerate, which also owns a factory in Jouet-sur-l'Aubois and the Saint-Nazaire mechanical facility, changed its name to S.E.M.T. Pielstick in honor of the business's founder, Gustav Pielstick.

In order to become the sole stakeholder of SEMT, MAN acquired MTU's interests in 2006. Then, in 2010, the businesses involved with diesel engines and turbo machinery amalgamated. Although it is still protected, the S.E.M.T. mark is no longer used as the company name.
